On March 29, 2017, Floor Leader of the Senate of the Tenth Olbiil Era Kelulau, Honorable Kerai Mariur, visited the Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) for a meeting with the chairman of PICRC Board of Directors, Mr. Noah Idechong. During the meeting, the Chairman Idechong provided updates about the Center’s programs and priorities. Prior to the meeting Senator Mariur had a chance to meet PICRC staff and take a tour of the Palau Aquarium with Chief Aquarist, Asap Bukurrou.
Throughout his career Senator Mariur has been a steward for the ocean and marine protection. In 1994 he introduced Marine Protection Act. This bill was passed with the purpose of protecting and promoting sustainable use of all marine species.
Senator Mariur was very supportive of the Center when it initially opened back in 2001. He was a member of the House of Delegates when the law to create the Center was passed. He later served as a Board Member of the Center from 2009-2012.
It is with the vision and support of people like Senator Mariur, that PICRC is here today, and that the development of important education and research programs have been made possible. In an expression of his gratefulness for Senator Mariner’s visit, Chairman Idechong said, “We greatly appreciate the efforts of Senator Mariur during his long standing career in helping to shape PICRC to where it is today”.
