PCC student Rubie Gabriel interns at PICRC


Ms. Rubie Gabriel, a student from Palau Community College (PCC) is currently interning at the Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC). Rubie began her Internship on January 24th and will finish by May 5th of this year.

Rubie graduated from Palau High School in May 2014 and is now enrolled at PCC majoring in Environmental/Marine Science. While she is fulfilling her PCC courses with PICRC she works part time as a Dolphins trainer’s assistant at Dolphins Pacific. Upon completing her education, she is interested in becoming a researcher in the future. read more

PICRC Hosts Intern from Kochi University, Japan

Honami Kubo, a student from Kochi University in Japan, studying Coastal Environmental Management, joins the ranks of interns at the Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) this summer.  Ms. Kubo will be at PICRC for the next couple of months, working with her mentor, Dr. Chuki Hongo, a researcher working at the Center under the Palau Coral Reef Island Ecosystems (PCoRIE) program on a project about marine plastic pollution.

Ms. Kubo had previously visited Palau last August. At that time, she was attending the International Training Program for Sustainable Society, a three week program under Japan’s International Center for Environmental Technology Transfer/Environmental Restoration and Conservation Agency.  During this program, she learned of Palau’s marine environment and had the opportunity to visit PICRC. She has now decided to return to PICRC as an intern to further her knowledge on marine plastic pollution. read more

Georgetown University Student Interns at PICRC

Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) continues to attract interns from all over the world to come and work with its researchers on different research projects. The latest intern is Farah Gustafson, a native of Washington, D.C., USA. Farah is a rising senior from Georgetown University, one of the most prestigious universities in the United States.  At Georgetown, she is studying Environmental Biology.

Over the next three weeks, Ms. Gustafson will be working with researcher Victor Nestor. She will assist Mr. Nestor on PICRCs project on assessing the impacts of increased tourism on coral reefs. With this project, Ms. Gustafson will be able to study the human impacts on coral reefs and expand her knowledge of marine systems and marine conservation. read more

Aquarium Curatorial Internship

Designed for marine biology students, this internship trains students on caring for and presenting live collections. Assist in tank designs and installation. Research Palau’s marine habitat and create miniature version in our tanks. Collect marine species for exhibits, release and replace species when necessary. Inventory exhibit species and communicate exhibit needs. Assist in all aspects of the daily operation of the Aquarium’s animal food preparation including daily preparation of the various fresh, frozen and live food products used to feed the animal collection. Ensure that food preparation and storage areas are maintained in a safe and sanitary manner. Feed animals and work alongside Senior Aquarists. Assist aquarists with the cleaning and maintenance of exhibits. read more
