Dr. Piera Biondi Returns to PICRC as New Fisheries Researcher

Dr. Piera Biondi has joined the Palau International Coral Reef Center as a new Fisheries Researcher.

Piera received her doctorate from the University of the Ryukyus in Okinawa where she studied coral reef restoration. She previously earned her Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Marine Biology in her home country of Italy.

As a Fisheries Researcher, Piera will carry out studies to improve fish stock status estimates, set appropriate quotas and build the long-term sustainability of Palau’s fisheries. She will also lead Marine Protected Area long-term monitoring surveys.

Piera first visited Palau in 2017 as part of a collaborative research project between the Center and the University of the Ryukyus.

“I fell in love with Palau and with the beautiful work environment at PICRC” said Piera. “Now, I love my job here at the Center because we do something meaningful to help the ocean and its ecosystems”

The Center’s team is excited to welcome Piera and looks forward to working with her towards the health of Palau’s fisheries!
