PICRC’s supporters donated over $88,000 during its 22nd anniversary fundraising dinner gala

The Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) celebrated its 22nd anniversary last Thursday with a fundraising dinner gala on PICRC’s grounds. Based around the theme “Exploring New Depths”, the gala celebrated PICRC’s research expansion into Palau’s open ocean and the ongoing growth in existing fields such as the development of the new Ocean Acidification (OA) laboratory.

This sold-out event, with over 200 attendees, was co-hosted by President Surangel Whipps, Jr. and Ambassador Jessica C. Lee of the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan). Attendees included the Rubekul Belau, Mechesil Belau, state governors, members of the Olbiil Era Kelulau (OEK), ambassadors, government and NGO partners, and community members.  Ambassador Lee and the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) donated $15,000 towards the fundraising event.

“Over the last two decades, PICRC has made significant contributions to marine research and environmental policies not only here in Palau, but also regionally and globally,” stated President Whipps during his co-host remarks. “This is made possible through the partnerships and cooperation you have cultivated over the years, and to the high caliber of the scientists and professionals working here.”

During her co-host remarks, Ambassador Lee spoke to the similarities and connections between Taiwan and Palau. “As island countries surrounded by the ocean, the deep cultivation of marine science and technology research and development is the cornerstone of Taiwan and Palau’s sustainable development. I believe “Exploring new depths” will be the beginning of a new chapter of Taiwan and Palau’s partnership in the year of 2023.”

The evening included a three-course meal with full table service provided by Palau Royal Resort, drinks donated by Shimbros International, and entertainment by talented local artists, Kendall Titiml and Kelau Remeliik.  Attendees were treated to a special performance by Kendall singing his original composition, “One Drop/Tal Ngimech”, the winner of the PNMS Song Contest.  Kelau also perform her original composition, “PNMS a di kloklek”, which won the most popular song in the PNMS Song Contest.

“We are in awe and humbled by the show of support from every segment of the Palauan community during the 22nd Anniversary Fundraising Dinner Gala,” stated PICRC CEO, Dr. Yimnang Golbuu.  “Our economy is still struggling, and many businesses have not fully recovered from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and yet, the Palauan community came together to provide such overwhelming support.  We are truly grateful and inspired by the support to the Center and we thank everyone for making our 22nd Anniversary Fundraising Dinner Gala such a successful and memorable event.”
