PICRC research staff Masasinge Tellei Hideos and McQuinnley Mesengei to pursue higher education

The Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) is pleased to announce that two of our valued team members, Researcher Masasinge Tellei Hideos, also known as Singe, and Research Assistant McQuinnley Mesengei, are concluding their time with us to further their education.

Singe has been part of the PICRC family for the past three years, starting his journey with us as an intern while still a student at Palau Community College (PCC). After earning his Bachelor’s degree in Geography, with a focus on Environmental Studies, he joined our team as a Communications and Outreach Officer and recently transitioned into research, contributing to our socio-economic project. Singe will now be pursuing a Master’s in Environmental Science at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York, USA.

Reflecting on his time at PICRC, Singe shared, “I’ve learned a lot in the past three years, and these experiences will definitely help me in my future endeavors. I’m deeply grateful to everyone at PICRC for their patience, support, and mentorship. I look forward to returning one day.”

McQuinnley, who has been with PICRC as a Research Assistant for three years, will be continuing his studies in Marine Science at the University of Hawai’i at Hilo. A graduate of PCC with an Associate Degree in Environmental Marine Science, McQuinnley has always had a deep connection to the ocean, a passion nurtured from a young age by his fisherman father. This love for the sea has made his time at PICRC feel more than just a job – it’s been a calling.

“When I started working at PICRC, everything felt natural; learning the scientific aspects was part of the journey, but the real joy was in doing what I love – like being in the ocean and diving – surrounded by amazing people. It feels like a family,” stated McQuinnley. He also shared a piece of advice for young Palauans: “Find something you love to do so that when you work, it doesn’t feel like work.”

“We are honored to have been part of Singe and McQuinnley’s professional journeys,” said Geraldine Rengiil, Director of the Research Department. “Their contributions and personalities have left a lasting impact at PICRC, and we eagerly anticipate the day they return with new knowledge and experiences to share. Until then, we wish them all the best as they embark on these exciting new chapters in their lives.”
