Australian Science Communicator joins PICRC as new Communications and Outreach Officer

At the start of July, the Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) was happy to welcome 24-year-old Rebecca Carey, from Australia, as a new Communications and Outreach Officer.

Rebecca brings a variety of experience with her. She has a Bachelor of Science in Nature-Based Ecotourism with a minor in Indigenous Studies and an Honors in Science Communication, both from The University of Adelaide in Australia. Before moving to Palau, she was a Reef Education Officer at the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. As a Communications and Outreach officer, she’ll be conducting school and community outreach across Palau, creating social media content, and leading aquarium tours. Rebecca is especially interested in how varied the role is as it’s an opportunity to develop many different skills.

“I am super excited to learn from the knowledgeable and talented people around me, who are leading the way in ocean conservation and research,” stated Rebecca. “My goal is to resonate the work we do at PICRC with people. I hope to communicate science in a way that is understood and appreciated by all, to empower ocean stewardship. I love to see the work I do making a difference.”

Since joining PICRC, Rebecca has contributed a significant amount, having created a TikTok channel, helped organize a science teacher’s workshop, and presented at several different schools. PICRC is thrilled to have Rebecca join the team and is excited to see what she’ll achieve.
