PICRC’s supporters donate over $114,000 at the 24th Anniversary Fundraising Gala Dinner
The Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) celebrated its 24th anniversary on Thursday, January 23, with a fundraising gala dinner held on its grounds. Centered on the theme “Resilient Ocean, Resilient Community”, the event acknowledged the Center’s continued commitment to conserving Palau’s marine ecosystems for the people and strengthening local communities in the face of challenges like climate change.
The sold-out event, attended by approximately 350 guests, was hosted by the Organization of State Speakers. Chairman of the Organization of State Speakers, Honorable Speaker Jefferson Thomas, delivered the Keynote Message wherein he remarked that “As hosts of the 24th Anniversary Fundraising Gala Dinner, the Organization of State Speakers are proud to support the Palau International Coral Reef Center – investing in the Center is investing in our communities.” He further stated “As state lawmakers, it is important to develop policies that are grounded in science. We should also continue to work with the Center so they know what we need and how they can help our communities.”
Distinguished attendees included President Surangel Whipps, Jr., High Chief Reklai Raphael B. Ngirmang, Ambassador Richelle Turner of the Australian Embassy, Ambassador Jessica C. Lee of the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Ambassador Orikasa Hiroyuki of the Embassy of Japan. Other distinguished guests included State Governors and Legislators, Government Officials, Ms. Ilana Seid, NGO partners, and community leaders.
The evening’s success was made possible through the generosity of its supporters, including the Organization of State Speakers, IP&E, Palau Coral Club, Palau Pacific Resort, Palau Royal Resort, SHIMBROS Inc., Surangel & Son’s Company, Mrs. Sandra Sumang Pierantozzi, Council of Chiefs, and Mechesil Belau. Additionally, generous in-kind contributions from Palau Royal Resort, the Civic Action Team, SHIMBROS Inc., the Funeral Home, Island Paradise Hotel, Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Industries and Commerce/ARFF and many others ensured the event ran smoothly and created a memorable experience for all. Overall, the Gala raised over $114,000, with all proceeds supporting PICRC’s research and education programs, fostering ocean stewardship across Palau.
The event featured a delightful three-course meal prepared by Palau Royal Resort, with appetizers by local chefs and businesses Taty’s Food Hub, Ms. Carol Emaurois, and The Penthouse, beverages by SHIMBROS Inc., and an outstanding performance by local artists 3KE.
The gala also marked the first-anniversary celebration under PICRC’s newly appointed CEO, Ms. Roxanne Siual Blesam. “Using science to guide our efforts, PICRC remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting our marine ecosystems and strengthening the communities that depend on them,” she noted in her welcoming remarks.
Honorable Speaker Jefferson Thomas of the Melekeok State Legislature highlighted the strong partnership between PICRC and Palauan states, emphasizing how states have greatly benefited from the Center’s research, education, and outreach efforts, while the Center continues to rely on resources and collaboration with the states to fulfill its mission.
H. E. Surangel Whipps, Jr. further underscored the significance of PICRC’s role, stating, “In following the Palauan spirit of conservation and sustainable development, my administration will continue to work with the national congress, state governments, diplomatic partners, and international organizations to support the Center’s critical work. It is equally important that PICRC continues its efforts in scientific research, education, and outreach, ensuring conservation benefits our communities and supports Palau’s commitment to the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.”
Mr. Omar Faustino, Chair of PICRC’s Board of Directors, closed the evening stating, “we have achieved remarkable things throughout the years. Let us continue to work together to navigate the currents of change, ensuring our ocean remains a source of life, sustenance, and wonder for generations to come.”
As part of the anniversary celebrations, PICRC is also hosting its annual education carnival from January 28-30. This three-day event, fully booked with 13 schools and an estimated 800 students, will feature engaging activities focused on mangroves, coral reefs, and deep-sea adaptations. It will also include booths hosted by our partners: the Palau Conservation Society (PCS), Palau Community College-Cooperative Research & Extension (PCC-CRE), and Friends of the Palau National Marine Sanctuary (PNMS). A highlight of the carnival will be showcasing findings from the Lebuu’s Voyage expeditions conducted within the PNMS.
PICRC sincerely thanks the community for their continued support in making these events possible. The gala dinner and education carnival embody the Center’s mission of fostering a resilient ocean and resilient community through research, education, collaboration, and partnerships.
