PICRC Strengthens Marine Conservation Partnerships with Ngaraard and Ngarchelong State Governments

The Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) has reinforced its commitment to protecting Palau’s marine resources by signing Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with Ngaraard State Government on March 7, 2025, and with Ngarchelong State Government on March 25, 2025, respectively. These agreements establish formal collaborations to enhance marine research, education, and outreach, ensuring the long-term sustainability of Palau’s oceans. The MOUs outline cooperative efforts focused on scientific research and data collection to support effective conservation and management strategies. Key activities under these partnerships include:

· Coral reef research and monitoring

· Fish stock surveys

 · Reef restoration

· Giant clam aquaculture

· Capacity building and training

· Education and community outreach

Under the agreements, PICRC will provide essential data for conservation planning, facilitate training in giant clam aquaculture and coral restoration, conduct joint research projects with Ngaraard and Ngarchelong State Rangers, and lead community outreach initiatives. Ngaraard and Ngarchelong State Governments will play a vital role by supporting marine research efforts, granting access and logistical assistance for field research, hosting community meetings, and collaborating with PICRC to integrate marine education into local elementary schools. “In response to the needs of our States, the MOUs between PICRC and the Ngaraard and Ngarchelong State Governments strengthen our collaboration as we scale up efforts in marine conservation and management,” said Ms. Roxanne Siual Blesam, Chief Executive Officer of PICRC. “By combining scientific expertise with local stewardship, we can implement more effective conservation Strategies and deepen the understanding of ocean health’s significance within these communities.”
