Adrian Ililau, Olympic Athlete and PCC Graduate, Joins PICRC as a Research Assistant

The Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) is happy to welcome Adrian Ililau as our newest Research Assistant! Adrian graduated from Palau Community College (PCC) in 2021 with an Associate’s Degree in Environmental/Marine Science. His first day with the Center was November 15th, 2021.

As a Research Assistant, Adrian is involved in all aspects of PICRC’s research projects, including fieldwork, data analysis and publishing scientific reports. Adrian recently received his PADI Open Water Scuba certification, and will use his new scuba skills to study coral reef sites and marine protected areas throughout Palau.

Before joining the Center as a Research Assistant, Adrian completed an internship with PICRC during his second year at PCC. Working with Researcher Victor Nestor, Adrian developed a research project studying the effects of heat stress on coral reefs. He also worked with researchers at the Stanford Center for Ocean Solutions mapping the distribution of heat tolerant corals throughout Palau. After the completion of his internship, researchers from Stanford University commended Adrian for his hard work and dedication during their time working together.

“In my new position at PICRC I hope to gain a greater understanding and interest regarding the ocean that surrounds our island nation” says Adrian.
Adrian also represented Palau in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, and enjoys running, swimming and exploring the outdoors in his free time. He hails from Ngermid along with his father, Tony Ililau, mother, Jonalyn Ililau and brother, Zane Ililau.

Adrian has quickly become a valued member of our Research team, and we are excited to continue working with him at the Center!
