Coral Biologist, Cinzia Alessi joins PICRC as Aquarium Researcher

The Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) is pleased to welcome Cinzia Alessi as an Aquarium Researcher, under the supervision of Aquarium Supervisor, Asap Bukurrou.

After finishing her undergraduate degree in marine biology and master’s in marine ecology at the University of Palermo, Cinzia obtained her PhD in population biology and ecology at the Pacific Doctoral School, University of New Caledonia. Her studies have led her to have a particular interest in understanding the intricacies around coral reefs and climate change.

Since joining PICRC in March, Cinzia has managed a project focused on genetic adaptation for successful coral restoration. This project is funded by the Coral Research and Development Accelerator Platform (CORDAP), collaborating with the University of Newcastle, the University of Queensland, and the University of Philippines. With climate change becoming a real threat to Palau’s coral reefs, Ciniza’s project will provide valuable insight on how to help safeguard local reefs. “The research I am undertaking will help us understand how coral heat tolerance is passed from one generation to the other and provide tools that can be used to help corals in the near future”, said Cinzia.

After leaving Sicily 10 years ago, Ciniza made a promise to herself to visit or work on all the coral reefs around the world. Palau was one place she could not miss. Cinzia’s skills and experience will be an asset to PICRC, and we are privileged to have her as part of the team, welcome Cinzia.
