Dawnette “Uly” Olsudong Appointed as Coral Futures Team Leader at PICRC

The Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) is proud to announce the appointment of Dawnette “Uly” Olsudong as Palau’s Coral Futures Team Leader.

This appointment marks a significant step forward for the Coral Futures Academy project, a collaborative initiative between PICRC, The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Stanford University, the Marshall Islands Conservation Society (MICS), and the Conservation Society of Pohnpei (CSP), aimed at scaling up the identification, protection, and local management of climate-resilient coral reefs across Micronesia.

In her new role, Uly will lead Palau’s efforts to identify heat-tolerant corals and incorporate them into reef restoration initiatives. A central part of her work will also focus on building local capacity by equipping community members with the tools and knowledge to integrate climate resilience into restoration efforts.

Uly brings a wealth of experience to the position. She first joined PICRC in 2008, shortly after graduating from college, and has since served in various research roles, including research assistant and junior researcher. She officially assumed her new position in January 2025.

Reflecting on the transition, Uly shared her enthusiasm for the role, “I hope to strengthen my leadership skills and continue learning new approaches that can help drive successful coral restoration efforts in Palau.”

“Uly has consistently shown deep dedication and passion for coral reef research,” said Imade Tellei, PICRC’s Director of Outreach. “Her experience and commitment make her an invaluable asset to the Coral Futures team as we work to enhance Palau’s reef resilience.”

PICRC looks forward to the valuable contributions Uly will bring to the Coral Futures Academy project and the progresses she will help drive in regional coral restoration efforts to strengthen reef resilience against climate impacts.
