Mireia Batlle Canalias joins PICRC as Communications and Outreach Officer

Mireia Batlle Canalias, from Spain, recently joined the Palau international Coral Reef Center (PICRC) as a Communications and Outreach Officer. Before moving to Palau, Mireia spent four years as a Science Writer and Project Manager at Science Crunchers, a Portuguese science communication agency. She has a Bachelor of Science in Genetics from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and a Master of Science in Science and Health Communication from Dublin City University.

Previously, Mireia was a mediator and facilitator at a Science Gallery in Dublin and enjoyed interacting with the public. After four years at the science communication agency and working from home, she wanted something that allowed her to engage with the community and see the impact of her work in a more direct way so, when she saw the job at PICRC advertised on Facebook, she decided to apply even though she’d never heard of Palau.

“Working at PICRC is a unique opportunity to combine my interest and passion for science communication, community, and conservation,” stated Mireia. “I expect to get a nice and challenging professional and personal experience. I hope to learn as much as I can, especially on the outreach part.”
Since being in Palau, Mireia has completed her PADI Open Water Scuba diving certificate. She looks forward to helping to develop outreach programs and educating the community on marine biodiversity and conservation.

Mireia’s skills are an asset to PICRC’s Outreach Department and PICRC is privileged to have her as part of the team.
