Palau International Coral Reef Center receives grant from Australia’s Government, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) recently received a grant from the Australian Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). This $25,000 grant will support PICRC’s activities in the topic of “Using Research, Education and Outreach to promote Science and support the management of Palau’s Marine Resources”.
The project prioritizes the biological monitoring of Marine Protected Areas and includes the nationwide socioeconomic assessment of the Palau National Marine Sanctuary. Outreach and Education activities that target school grades K-12, stakeholders, managers and appropriate leadership will also be supported by the project. Ongoing and upcoming projects are continued throughout the year to address issues and shed light on any gaps identified. This will help resource managers and state & national leadership to make informed decisions to effectively manage and preserve our natural resources.
The Government of Australia’s DFAT has previously provided funding to the Center through a grant that specifically funded the renovation of PICRC’s student lab, along with the purchase of new tools and equipment to help ensure accessible education to school aged students. PICRC continues to strengthen its partnership ties with the Australian Government this year as they co-hosted PICRC’s 23rd Anniversary at the beginning of this year in January.
With a vision for empowered ocean stewardship that sustains the people and inspires the world, the Center’s research and contribution to science education will impact Palau’s conservation efforts and will lead us to effectively manage our natural resources and ensure the sustainable livelihoods of the people.
