Palau International Coral Reef Center Wraps Up Successful Fellowship with Ms. Sophia Siegel and Stanford University

The Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) is proud to announce the successful completion of a fellowship program with the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, in partnership with the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, the Haas Center for Public Service, and Stanford in Government. Over the course of seven weeks, Ms. Sophia Elise Siegel provided research and technical assistance in contributing to the marine spatial planning (MSP) efforts pertaining to the Palau National Marine Sanctuary (PNMS).

Ms. Siegel’s work was conducted in consultation with key partners and experts in large scale marine protected areas and directly supported PICRC’s mandate in coordinating research for the PNMS. Her project involved compiling and reviewing scientific assessments to inform a summarized MSP report, a nationally commissioned report informing the future outlook of the PNMS.

Mr. King M. Sam, the PNMS Program Manager and Ms. Siegel’s primary mentor, praised her contributions. “It has been a pleasure to work with Sophia. Her diligent approach to researching and synthesizing complex information from the MSP report was highly impressive. Sophia’s passion for ocean stewardship is evident in her work and she has a bright future ahead of her in this field.” As a research institute, PICRC benefits from this partnership by continuing to expand its scientific capacity to examine highly technical reports in this new frontier of offshore research for Palau.

Ms. Roxanne S. Blesam, Chief Executive Officer of PICRC, highlighted the value of the partnership. “The collaboration with Stanford University is invaluable and Sophia’s work exemplifies the positive impact of this partnership. Her research will contribute directly to our mission of effective marine conservation and management, and we are grateful for her excellent work and commitment.”

Reflecting on her experience, Ms. Siegel expressed her sincere appreciation. “I am incredibly grateful to PICRC for the opportunity to contribute to such meaningful work. My time in Palau has been an invaluable learning experience, both professionally and personally. I want to thank everyone for their incredible hospitality and the entire PICRC team for their mentorship and friendship. I will carry the lessons and memories with me as I continue my studies.” In September 2025, Sophia will return to Stanford University to pursue her Master’s degree in Environmental Policy.

PICRC remains deeply committed to nurturing strong partnerships with international institutions and students, working together to advance scientific research for the people of Palau and for our shared global ocean.
