PICRC Bids Farewell to German Volunteer Simon Pernpeintner
The Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) recently bid farewell to German volunteer Simon Pernpeintner, who completed nearly three months of service with the Center’s Aquarium team. Simon began his placement on March 31, bringing with him a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the Universität Bremen, with a major in Ecology, and hands-on experience working with corals and reef organisms in aquarium settings.
Previously, Simon worked with corals in a laboratory during his degree. This gave him foundational knowledge of coral research and ecology. He is also a certified SCUBA diver and has freediving experience, which were assets during fieldwork days.
During his time at PICRC, Simon contributed to a range of activities, including the daily care and maintenance of aquarium systems and support for ongoing research projects. He played a key role in assisting with the April coral spawning event and urchin spawning efforts, gaining valuable insights into marine reproductive biology and reef restoration practices.
Simon also developed and conducted his own research project, investigating methods to improve the survival of juvenile corals by co-culturing them with snails, which may help reduce algal overgrowth. The experiment highlighted his initiative and scientific curiosity, adding meaningful value to the Aquarium team’s ongoing work.
“One of the highlights of my time at PICRC was participating in the coral spawning event in April. I was fortunate to be here during that window and witness this spectacular event. It was also an incredible opportunity to learn more about coral reproductive biology, spawning techniques, and how these processes can be applied in reef restoration efforts. I’m grateful to the Aquarium team and the entire PICRC staff for welcoming me and making this such a memorable and enriching experience,” said Simon.
PICRC extends its sincere thanks to Simon for his contributions and dedication during his volunteer placement. His skills, fresh ideas, and enthusiasm for marine science were a meaningful addition to the team. Simon now plans to return to University in October to pursue a Masters degree in Marine Biology and PICRC wishes him all the best for his future endeavors.
