Watson N. Winner joins PICRC as Research Assistant
The Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) is proud to introduce Watson N. Winner, from Peleliu, as the newest member of its research team.
After graduating from Okkodo High School in Guam, Watson gained diverse work experience as a driver assistant, baggage handler, and vehicle mechanic in various locations across the United States. His journey at PICRC began as a Security Guard for the Center, but his curiosity and growing interest in marine science inspired him to transition into his current role as a Research Assistant.
Reflecting on this shift, Watson says, “Prior to joining the research team, I had no knowledge or experience with fish and coral studies. Since then, I’ve had the privilege to learn the scientific and common names of many fishes and corals in Palau’s waters.”
As a Research Assistant, Watson contributes to important scientific initiatives, including sampling fish gonads and otoliths in the lab. He also supports researchers in the field with projects such as coral reef monitoring (CRM), retrieving and deploying temperature loggers and sensors, and handling receivers for marine research. His key goal is to continue learning and contributing to the understanding of Palau’s rich marine ecosystems.
PICRC is proud to have Watson on board and looks forward to the unique perspective and enthusiasm he brings to the role. His story is a testament to curiosity and dedication, with his dream of returning to Palau to help develop his country made possible through hard work and perseverance.
