Ocean Acidification Research
Ocean Acidification is impacting all the world’s oceans and could have devastating consequences for marine life in Palau. To address this growing threat, PICRC is leading national efforts to understand and respond to ocean acidification in our waters.
We have established long-term partnerships with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Korean Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) to build new research infrastructure in Palau, including a state-of-the-art ocean acidification lab at PICRC and a monitoring buoy at Ngederrak Bay. These ongoing projects will allow us to accurately measure ocean acidification’s effects in Palau, and develop new policies to safeguard our healthy oceans — and the Palauan communities that depend on them.
